In the first list of Anabaptists who left Bern, Switzerland in 1697 for Ste. Marie aux Mines, France. It includes Jacqui Hochstetler (Jakob Hochstetler, later identified probably as Jakob of Winterkraut, a minister) and Amy Jacqui (Jacob Amman, founder of the Amish).
Virgil Miller supposes that Jakob of Winterkraut is father to Jacob the Immigrant (1712-1782), who came to Pennsylvania, started the ‘first Amish Mennonite community’ in Northkill, Berks County, PA.
“It is thought that the Father of Jacob Hochstetler, the 1738 immigrant, was Jacob Hostettler, the minister and colleague of Jacob Amman from Winterkraut near Schwarzenburg, Canton Bern, Switzerland.” (BSOTC, p220).
His death in Switzerland is not recorded, it is thought he died in Ste. Marie, although may have traveled for a time to Baden, SW after an expulsion order of Anabaptists in 1713.
To summarize: Ira “Bud” Baker (Grandpa) and Mary “Bertha” Eash (Grandma) both descend from Joseph Hochstetler since Bud’s grandfather and Bertha’s great grandfather were brothers. These brothers were great grandchildren of Joseph Hochstetler. He was likely grandson to Jakob the Winterkraut, who was a minister alongside Jakob Amman.
*It is of note that neither Jakob Amman or Menno Simons (founders of the Amish and Mennonites, respectively) never had any children. There is no line of descendants of either.
